Birds of Prey Poisonings Continue

According to the RSPB’s Scottish branch, illegal poisoning is hindering the growth of populations of birds of prey such as red kites. In 2010 these birds have been poisoned in many areas of Scotland including the Highlands and Tayside. Birdtrader has already noted in previous news articles that poisoning birds of prey in Scotland is illegal but occasional. Since the bird species was reintroduced in 1989 the RSPB claims that numbers of breeding pairs were thought to be at their highest for over 200 years. However, deaths caused by both illegal and legal poisons have continued to endanger this increase in bird of prey population. Six birds - three in the Highlands, two in Tayside and one in Dumfries and Galloway - were killed illegally. Eleven young birds were also recorded dead in their nests near Inverness, having died after ingesting prey that in turn was killed by legal pest controls.
