The division of the Chinese Army based in the state of Sichuan has announced plans to train 10,000 carrier pigeons to provide communications in the case of war or natural disaster. The “squadron” will be the world’s biggest.
By placing their food at one location and their home at another location, pigeons have been trained to fly back and forth up to twice a day reliably. This setup allows pigeons to cover 160 km (99 mi) round trip. 32 pigeons were presented with the Dickin Medal for their services for the British Empire in the Second World War.
